Financial Aid Counselor
The Financial Aid Counselor provides superior customer service to Saint Joseph’s University students and families throughout the financial aid process. The Counselor is responsible for analyzing, assessing and exercising some independent judgment to address and resolve issues associated with financial aid, performing federal verification and processing federal and private loans. The Financial Aid Counselor plays a key role in ensuring that the University is in compliance with all institutional financial aid policies and federal/state aid regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities: (Include but are not limited to):
Essential Duties:
● Adhere to university policies with regard to administering financial aid according to federal, state and institutional guidelines, while exercising independent judgment in the resolution of student and parent financial concerns.
● Manage financial aid processing for an undergraduate and graduate caseload, including: completing federal verification, processing PLUS and GradPLUS Loans, private loans, loan changes and PHEAA State Grants and resolving associated issues.
● Meet with students and families to analyze and assess needs related to financial aid and general billing questions. Work to bring concerns to closure and advise students of various implications of any changes.
● Provide office coverage on a regular basis, meeting with students and answering phones during scheduled coverage shifts.
● Participate in ongoing training sessions to develop knowledge of financial aid regulations and attend relevant professional conferences and meetings.
● Assist with and conduct, as needed, financial aid presentations.
● Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director and/or Senior Director of Financial Aid.
Additional Duties will include one or more of the following:
● Manage specific PHEAA Programs, such as RTSS, PATH, EAP, etc.
● Manage all certification of alternative loans on private loan platform.
● Coordinate application of tuition discounts.
● Assist with administration of the University’s financial wellness program.
Saint Joseph's University
Minimum Qualifications: ● Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of two years of professional experience in a financial services and/or compliance related customer service position. ● Excellent customer service and communication skills ● Demonstrated ability to make decisions based on objective data while applying complex regulations and institutional policies. ● Demonstrated ability to manage time, work in a collaborative environment, and under specific deadlines. ● Demonstrated problem solving skills. ● Demonstrated ability to clearly and respectfully communicate with students, families and university constituents through a variety of media. ● Must be in good standing in all Federal Title IX programs. ● Driver’s license and available vehicle. Preferred Qualifications: ● Demonstrated experience in financial aid or billing services functions within higher education. ● Experience with Ellucian Banner Student, Financial Aid and/or Accounts Receivable modules and/or Workday Student System. ● Experience with data reporting tools. ● Experience with conducting presentations.
